—- see bottom of post to report camp activity —-
Many of you are aware of the work we’ve done in the early part of the year attempting to clean out transient camps along the Sandy. (see here, here, here, and here). By spring, we had cleared the remnants of virtually all the previously active sites, and we were making progress with local law enforcement in understanding how to keep the transient camps out of the area.
Unfortunately, each time we thought we had some traction and were talking to the right people, things seemed to change.
As of now, the camp population is re-establishing itself, and the cleanup effort is in jeopardy of being wiped out with new camps and debris.
There appears to be some motion by the county (initiated by commissioner Diane Mckeel) to fund an effort to address the problem by relocating and providing services to the campers. Though there was a vote to allocate funds we haven’t heard yet whether it has been approved.
We believe it’s time for delta users to help make the issue more visible.
We’d like those visitors who notice camps being set up anywhere in he delta, particularly along the Sandy, to help report them by notifying police dispatch. We will follow up with the commissioners office to understand the status of the above proposal.
In the mean time, if you notice camps or potential camp activity (setting tests, hauling supplies, dumping garbage, and active campfires), please call:
